L. Grant Wylie was a 2001 graduate of East High School. Grant’s participation on the EHS speech and debate team helped him discover and develop the strength and potential of his own voice. After graduating from EHS, Grant continued his education and earned degrees in moral philosophy, political science, and law. The skills and values he learned while mastering speech and debate would empower Grant to be a leader and voice for others in many ways: as a lawyer seeking justice on behalf of the community and victims of crime, as a professor encouraging students to strive for excellence, as a citizen inspiring young people of diverse backgrounds to go to college and develop their talents and potential, and as a speech and debate coach at East High School. Grant often said it was at EHS where “the initial flame was lit” which inspired him to return to East as a speech and debate coach. As a coach, Grant connected with students and exemplified the DEFT values of Discipline, Eloquence, Focus, and Transformation.

The L. Grant Wylie ‘Shine Your Light” Memorial Scholarship is being awarded to a college-bound Senior and member of the Denver East Forensic Team who has demonstrated the same dedication to academic achievement, community service, diversity, and leadership that shined so brightly in the life of Grant Wylie.
